I started with the first sample using free machine straight stitch using my drawings as inspiration. I used natural scoured cotton fabric.

With the second sample I had some difficulty with whip stitch. My sewing machine is fairly new and although it has a separate bobbin case for loose bottom tension I had no success. I did notice that I was producing a whip type stitch but on the reverse of the fabric so I have a cross cable/whip stitch. I used straight stitch.

With the third sample I continued with my cable/whip stitch but using only zig zag stitch. I did achieve some nice texture but no little bobbles pulled through. I have an old 1960's machine which I can use for future samples as I had success on this machine before.

For the fourth sample using cable stitch my machine was fine. It has the separate bobbin case and settings particularly for this. I use a thick cotton perle in the bobbin and both straight and zig zag stitches. The fabric pulled and gathered the more I worked the squares, especially on the most heavily stitched squares. I didn't use a hoop for this sample but that would keep the fabric more flat.
3.4
For the final sample I used different threads in the bobbin for cable stitch using both straight and zig zag stitch. I enjoyed this sample and I found the softer threads pulled through more easily. With the stiffer threads I needed to machine on the slowest setting.
